styO
Louisville
COLORADO • SING 1878
Parks and Public Landscaping Advisory Board
Minutes
Thursday, August 05, 2021
Cottonwood Park
7 PM
1. Roll Call: PPLAB members present: Laurie Harford, Ellen Toon, Shelly Alm, Dave Clabbots and
Steve Knapp. Staff Liaison: Dean Johnson. Public Attendee: Josh Cooperman, 216 Griffith St.
2. Approval of Agenda: Unanimously approved
3. Approval of Minutes: Unanimously approved
4. Staff Updates
• City of Louisville is evaluating in person meetings, considering return to virtual.
o If return to virtual, truncated meeting schedule is possible.
• Seasonal staff hiring was low and a few full-time positions were vacated, making for a
challenging summer season.
o Low seasonal staff made weed control a challenge; discussions continuing
around move to more full-time staff.
o Balancing landscape maintenance tasks and staffing for summer athletics has
been a challenge.
• Work with Bridge House has been a huge success.
• Looking into funding for irrigation repairs.
5. Board Updates
• Outgoing board member Diana has recommended a replacement; this replacement will
need to apply during the regularly scheduled appointment window in November. Shelly
also knows someone who may be interested.
6. Public Comments on Items Not on Agenda
• Josh Cooperman, member of the Louisville Sustainability Advisory Board (LSAB), is
present to Liaise with PPLAB
o LSAB: Wishes to start a conversation around more sustainable mowing and
landscaping practices.
o LSAB: Sustainable practices include choices around areas to mow/not
mow/establish meadows. Cut back on mowing near/around streams. Reduce
'customary' mowing around pathways/replace with native vegetation.
o PPLAB: Native vegetation can be a challenge to establish; customary mowing
around pathways may be done for sight/safety reasons. Communication with
public around move towards sustainable practices/reduction of chemical weed
control has been moving forward.
o PPLAB: Mowing tends to occur in non -open space designated properties (open
space is not mowed). Current policy is geared towards mowing; however a
public process/City Council process may move towards reduction in mowing.
o PPLAB: move towards non -herbicide weed control may lead to additional
mowing as a'mechanical' method of weed control.
E
