City Council
Meeting Minutes
June 7, 2022
regulations. We have been let down by the federal and state governments that won't do
anything about this; so we have to. We don't want a patchwork of laws, but the local level
is the only place this is getting done.
Councilmember Brown stated it is time to take action. Since Columbine there have been
too many mass shootings to count. Local governments have a responsibility to protect
residents and tonight we make a stand to make Louisville a safer community.
Mayor Stolzmann stated she has experienced gun violence in her own life and we haven't
done anything to correct the issue. The federal and state governments have failed to act.
We can put together common sense regulations to address this. We have been
collaborating with our neighbors regionally and it will make a difference and have a
positive change.
Public Comments
Guillermo Valezuela, Louisville, stated when Columbine happened we thought it would
never happen again but it happens over and over. He works in Denver Public Schools
and sees the fear kids have of mass shootings. We need to expand these rules to all
communities throughout the state.
Heather Kinz, Louisville, stated her child attends Fireside and she worries about
shootings every day. She urged approval.
Tangi Lancaster, Erie, stated she supports the ordinances. She hopes Erie will follow this
lead. She stated we need to address mental health issues and the infatuation with fire
arms.
Corrie Williams, Louisville, stated no community should ever have to go through a mass
shooting. She stated responsible gun owners will not be affected by these new rules, they
are common sense regulations. She urged approval.
Councilmember Dickinson stated there are other issues that need to be addressed such
as mental health issues and resources. This is just one thing that we can do to help and it
may help stop one shooting.
Councilmember Fahey reviewed statistics from the American Academy of Pediatrics that
show a waiting period reduces the numbers of people who die from guns. She agreed
mental health issues needs to be addressed. She stated this is not a ban on all guns, just
a limitation on assault weapons.
Councilmember Brown noted that people who live in homes with guns are more likely to
die by suicide, it is a public health issue on many fronts.
