Senior Advisory Board
Meeting Minutes
3/17/09
Note: Last year, "Create our Future" funds were available only for new
programs. This year, they can also be used to sustain existing projects.
Application deadline: April 3.
Claudine reminded focus groups to think about their new goals for 2009. Reports
are needed for the July study session with the City Council.
Focus Groups
A. Housing —Bob Pierce
He and Walt met with the Louisville Housing Authority "this morning" (March 17).
Claudine stated that Boulder County has 400 people are on the waiting list for
housing, 55 from Louisville and 44 of the 55 on the Section 8 list for housing:
13% of these are from Louisville. Walt has asked Selena to keep a list of people
who come in to ask about senior housing (not necessarily assisted living). The
big need is for good rental properties. Seniors, he said, want independence.
Bob mentioned that the Comprehensive Plan deals with senior housing in terms
of visitability. Paul Woods thinks this is appropriate for a 209 housing ordinance.
They have to update the Plan to include national standards. Bob will try to get a
copy of the new ordinance they'll be working on. This, he added, is an excellent
time to get visitability requirements incorporated.
B. Social and Civic Engagement
1. Programs— Larry Brassem
Larry mentioned that the program committee makes suggestions but the
programs chosen to appear in the senior bulletin may be different, based on
availability. The Program committee will meet in April. Contact him with ideas
for June November.
2. Sunshine— Barbara Wilson.
Barbara sent out one card, to Bob Pierce. She will attend the AAC meeting on
April 3.
3. Garden Club —Carol Purfurst
The club, called "Bloomin' Seniors," met on March 25. They are trying for a plot
at the Senior Center and talked of wheelchair accessible, raised flower beds.
They came up with a proposed budget of $1,000. They are now thinking of pots
on rolling dollies. Barbara P noted that a Boulder nursery called Blooming
sells a paper implanted with seeds. Katie and Carol will work on a "Create our
Future" grant.
3. Intergenerational Claire Floyd
Claire noted that six people in her group are now volunteering at Fireside
Elementary. They are: Claire, Carol, Sheila Newton, Gail Reichert, Deanna
Bodily and Janet Brummel. The work is going well and is fun.
C. Physical and Mental Health Carol Purfurst.
No report.
