Parks & Public Landscaping Advisory Board <br />Minutes <br />DATE <br />Page 3of7 <br />Barb: We need to eliminate 6' tall ornamental grasses at Centennial and <br />McCaslin intersection due to line of sight issues. <br />Senje: Asked if City list of plants includes butterfly friendly varieties such as <br />butterfly weed for the monarchs? Noted butterfly populations have suffered over <br />recent years. City Staff replied that our horticulturist has included pollinator <br />friendly native plants in the City Plant List. <br />Curtis shared some illustrations of potential layout of planting beds with bands of <br />vegetation, park like character, creating visual continuity with existing landscape <br />elements, like the McCaslin underpass at Harper Lake. <br />PPLAB member suggested a Cross Walk in Skate Park area to accommodate <br />foot traffic. <br />Cynthia: Noted that for public landscaping areas, Safety (reduced mowing, <br />consider sight lines), Sustainability and Practicality are core issues. Some art and <br />design rhythm are nice, consistent with our comprehensive plan and our values. <br />Not3ed that she is really happy with design flow and selected materials, <br />suggested some Colorado red stone, but still need to be practical. Prefers <br />hardscape for medians because brown grasses can be triggering for our <br />population. <br />Carter noted that design might include cobble mulch at some point, but City Staff <br />expressed concern that weed control would be an issue. <br />Carter presented photos of Enclave and Coal Creek entryways (see PPLAB <br />Meeting Packet), objective to return to original waterwise and native oriented <br />plants. <br />Project Timing: Focusing on Tier One medians, design 90% complete, will be <br />ready to build in 2023 see schedule in presentation (PPLAB Meeting Packet). <br />Abby: City Staff actively involved in design process, sustainable native focus, <br />reduction of maintenance, safety issues considered. Irrigation team, landscape <br />team comments coming. Balance of plant materials and hard scape may be <br />better used as we go. Budget driven, work for sustainability and control expense. <br />More pollinator plants the better! Design Concepts will suggest planting locations <br />and species comment. <br />Ellen: Expressed approval of current plans. <br />Adam: Commented that this is the 5t" or 6t" meeting on Median renovation, <br />appreciates the level of engagement and PPLAB participation. Thanks and <br />"Kudos" to Carter and Design Concept team, for their patience and consideration <br />of staff recommendations, including the 2019 tree pallets, and sight line issues. <br />Adam: Regarding next steps, RFP will need to go to City Council for approval, <br />looking at mid to late Feb. timing, running designs by Jeff Durbin, City Manager, <br />later this month, RPF for CMGC company as General Contractor for the entire <br />job, one agency will be supporting public outreach part, bidding of construction <br />management. It is crucial to have this long- term responsibility and continuity, <br />planning to award contract in mid -April. Begin work on Tier Two design after <br />that. Structural walls and major stuff slated for this Summer, this Fall and next <br />Spring for planting! <br />PPLAB thanked Carter and Design Concepts for their efforts. <br />
