The following photo, which was taken by Louisville amateur photographer Marcello <br />"Frank" Jacoe, also shows the house, possibly at around this same time. The houses, <br />from left to right, are 1021, 1033, 1041, and 1101 Jefferson. <br />Another photo from this era shows a woman standing on Jefferson near this house. A <br />section of the porch of 1021 Jefferson can be seen on the far left, and the house at 1033 <br />Jefferson is on the right of it, behind the trees. <br />The Fortes sold 1033 Jefferson in 1918 to Mary Smith Mitchell. <br />Mary Smith Mitchell Ownership, 1918-1923 <br />Mary Smith Mitchell (1859-1939) purchased 1033 Jefferson in 1918. She was born in <br />England and came to the U.S. in 1871 with her family when she was about 12. They then <br />moved to Louisville, where her brothers worked in coal mines. By 1880, Mary was <br />married to Thomas Mitchell, a Louisville saloonkeeper. He died in 1915. <br />Though Mary Mitchell apparently lived elsewhere in Louisville during her ownership of <br />1033 Jefferson, records suggest that she rented the house to two of her adult children. <br />M <br />17 <br />
