The location was chosen due
to the ;mailability of land, ;and it has served the Fire District 1wei] — providing excellent access
to downtown and western Louisville_
Since 1971, the residential population in Louisville has more than doubled. The predominant
rural and agricultural land use has been supplanted by a diverse urban infrastructure, including
main' business and industrial land uses, plus significant growth in suburban residential
development, Projcctnns for future growth include continued expansion of the residential
population to 24,000 +/- residents, densitication of the core area to include a transit village,
and infill development throughout the urban core and along the perimeter. This trend
towards increased desgn, and urbanization has lead to stress on support systems, such as
police and fire departments.
Many of the attributes of tirestation no. 1 have become outdated and obsolete. Development
along the eastern edge of l,uui:sville and north along 960t, Street (Louisville Fire Protection
District includes land along 96' north to Arapahoe, and south to the turnpike) has placed
additional burden on firefighting teams and apparatus, and resulted in longer than desirable
response times to emergencies. The following is a partial list of problems and areas for
improvement for htxstation 1:
1."Mere are two high -bay apparatus gat:ige laa 's and two low -bay apparatus garage ba4s :it
the ftrestation. Due n, the nature of emergencies and events, it is necessary to increase
the allocation of high -bay spaces for parking and servicing of equipment. Station 1
needs another high -bay.
?. Firestation 1 contains the training component tiar the LFPD on the second floor, 13v
increasing the height of one of the existing apparatus bays to provide the additional
high -bar. the existing training facility space will be cut in half, dramatically limiting the
usefulness of the training facility.
the wvidtli of the current facility's overhead bay di 'ors is 1 tl' R", This was acceptable in
i.he 1970's, when firefighting apparatus were smaller and more maneuverable..
