D. During construction of site improvements, erect suitable protective <br /> barriers (generally located beyond the drip line) around trees to be <br /> preserved, making sure trunks, branches and root structures are not <br /> damaged by construction equipment. (S) <br />E. Incorporate tree wells or retaining walls as necessary in the landscape plan <br /> to protect existing trees. (G) Maintain historic drip lines. (G) <br /> <br />5.10 Site Furniture and Features <br /> <br />Policy: <br />Site furnishings include benches, waste receptacles, planters, railings and bollards. <br />Visual consistency of these elements is desired throughout each development. All <br />components of outdoor site furniture should be low maintenance, highly durable <br />and resistant to vandalism, graffiti, and theft. <br /> <br />Standards and Guidelines: <br /> A. Outdoor Seating <br /> 1) Use outdoor seating that is comfortable, attractive, durable and easy to <br /> maintain. (S) <br /> 2) Locate benches at major building entryways, drop-off areas, transit <br /> stops, pedestrian courtyards and plazas. (S) <br /> 3) Locate benches in areas that receive direct sunlight in the winter, are <br /> sheltered from winds and shaded in the summer. (G) <br /> 4) Where seating is fixed, provide a variety of arrangements (both linear <br /> and grouped), which accommodate two (2) to six (6) persons. (G) <br /> B. Planters and Waste Receptacles <br /> !) Design planters and waste receptacles to coordinate with other <br /> furniture. (G) <br /> 2) Use materials and colors similar to those used for benches. (G) <br /> C. Tree Grates <br /> 1) I lse of tree grates is discouraged unless used in con,Junction with <br /> structural soils_ Use If necessary; use tree grates to prevent excessive <br /> soil compaction and to give added interest to the pavement. (G) <br /> 2) Choose tree grates that are fabriCated of a strong, durable material. (S) <br /> In areas which receive heavy use, tree guards may be appropriate to <br /> give added protection to young trees. (G) <br /> D. Trash dumpsters <br /> 1) Provide a concrete pad a minimum of 8 feet wide to provide truck <br /> access to dumpster locations. (S) <br /> 2) Enclose and landscape around all trash dumpsters.
