HistoricalCommission
Minutes
November 17, 2010
Page 2of 4
information beyond just GIS information for anyaddresses in Jefferson Place. One particular
grant deadline has passed forthis year, but she plans to still proceed with looking at other grant
opportunities that couldhelp the Museum, including looking for a grant todefray the costs of
digitization so that images are available to public beyond what isavailable to view only in the
Museum. The Museum willbe looking for a volunteer position job posting for someone who
has grant writing experience.
Gail Khasawneh’s WWII program was the third of joint programs between the Museum and
Libraryin 2010,and it will be playing on channel8 for the next week and will play several times
per day.
Library use was up in October by 10% over last year. The OneBook program with Louisville,
Lafayette and Superior is aiming to launch next summer/fall. The steering committee including
all three mayors, Libraryboardmembers, teachers, people in the arts, andcommunity
members, will look to tie in the three museums as well. The announcement willcome next July
onthetitle and the programming will last about six weeks.
VII.Museum Coordinator’s Report:Bridget Bacon
A.Approval of Deeds of Gifts from donors. It was moved, seconded and carried to accept the
following donations to the museum:
(1)Kim Daldos -a law book found in his home that belonged to EdwardAffolter as well as a
scrapbook of photos from the Moffitt family
(2)Earl Bolton -1976 license plate from state bicentennial
(3)David Buffer -plastic card dated 1956 belonging to the previous owner of his home. It
appears to be an early credit card for Conoco.
(4)Beverly Clyncke -a class ring from 1933 Louisville high class,a pencil from 1933 class
reunionin 1983,and an original letter written to her grandparents
(5)Grace Dionigi -a LouisvilleTimes issuefrom 1988 as well as some 1964 typed reports for
water treatment by John “Ring” Dionigi.
B. Questions concerning Museum Coordinator’s Report: None. Bridget noted that the Fall
issue of the Louisville Historian, which was a special edition, did not cost more to mail and
only minimally more than usual to print. Also, it will soon be time again to note volunteer
hours and bring the time sheets to Januarymeeting.
VIII.Museum and Commission Projects
A. Chair Dan Mellish introduced the topic of exploring apossible separation of the Historical
Commission into an advisoryboard&a fundraising board.
Bridget Bacon referred to the chartincluded with the meeting packet. It shows that other
city governments in our region do not have museum advisoryboards that are also 501c3
fundraising boards, although a number of city museums have both advisory boards and
fundraising boards supporting them. The chart compared citieswith the same museums
cited in the advisory board presentation from last summer’s study sessionwith City Council.
The Commission discussed the Museum’s and its own organizational structures. Currently,
Commission members are appointed by City Councilto both the advisory board and the
private 501c3 nonprofit corporation. The Commission discussed thepossibility of
separating into two different boards, similarto how the Library Board of Trustees and the
Library Foundation Board are structured. The Historical Society has become the name for
the membership, andis not an appointed group or an official organization with its own
leadership. Boards and commissions cannot have their own volunteers without direct
supervision which is limited by Bridget’s hours, and having a separatedfund raising group
couldhave more flexibility to have more volunteers for its own events. The fund raising
board wouldbe ableto take in monetary donations, handle memberships, sell products,
help raise money for anew building, run community events, and allocatefunds for
