RESOLLUTON NO. 12 <br />SERIES 2008 <br />A RESOLUTION URGING 'THE BOULDER VALLEY SCHOOL <br />DISTRICT BOARD OF EDUCATION TO PURSUE ALTERNATIVES FOR <br />THE LOUISVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL RENOVATION PROJECT THAT <br />ACCOMPLISH THE COMMUNITY'S SHARED GOALS OF HISTORIC <br />PRESERVATION, OUTSTANDING EDUCATION FACILITIES, AND <br />SCHOOL SAFETY <br />WHEREAS, as part of the 2006 Boulder Valley School District (District) Bond Program, <br />the District is undertaking renovations to Louisville Middle School located on Main Street in <br />Louisville; and <br />WHEREAS, Louisville Middle School is an historically significant school having been <br />built by residents of Louisville during; the Great Depression with a Works Progress <br />Administration grant; and <br />WHEREAS, the building served as Louisville High School for over 30 years before <br />becoming Louisville Middle School; and <br />WHEREAS, Louisville Middle School is an historic landmark and serves as a vital <br />gateway to Louisville's historic downtown; and <br />WHEREAS, the District has adviised that, after receiving additional input from the <br />community and reviewing costs and program implications, the Louisville Middle School Design <br />Advisory Team (DAT) has directed that th.e renovation project move forward without a design <br />that preserves the historic portion of the school building; and <br />WHEREAS, City Council is of the opinion that its and many Louisville voters' support <br />of the 2006 Bond issue was based upon, among other things, assurances from the School District <br />that renovation of the Louisville Middle School would include preservation of the historic <br />portion of the building; and <br />WHEREAS, the City Council is of the opinion that alternatives that include historic <br />preservation should be further analyzed anct discussed by and with the District Board, including <br />further public discussion; and <br />WHEREAS, while not seeking to delay the project, the City Council finds that the <br />District's project planning efforts should :further include ahigh-level, collaborative and goal <br />oriented effort to identify alternatives that would accomplish the community's shared goals of <br />preserving the historic portion of the Louisville Middle School building, providing outstanding <br />education facilities, and ensuring school saff;ty; and <br />
