Louisville Historical Museum
Department of Library & Museum Services
City of Louisville, Colorado
September 2016
ii its
1m Louisville
COLORADO • SINCE 1878
225 County Road, Louisville, Colorado
Legal Description: Lots 12 & 13, Block 9, Murphy Place
Year of Construction: 1908
Summary: French families owned this house, located on the southeast corner of Frenchtown,
for 28 years, until 1936. At that time, it was purchased by Carmen Romano. He and his relatives
then owned 225 County Rd. for 77 years, until 2013.
History of Murphy Place Subdivision
Peter F. Murphy platted the subdivision of Murphy Place in 1907. He did so as President of the
Louisville Realty & Securities Company.
Brunet Ownership, 1908-1917; Date of Construction
Leonce Brunet (1882-1918) purchased these lots in 1908 from the Louisville Realty & Securities
Company. He and his wife, Leah Wattelet Brunet (1884-1949), and their baby daughter, Lea,
had journeyed from France to the U.S. in 1902. Their additional children who lived with them in
Louisville were Bertha, Leon, and Elsie. At the time when Brunet purchased the lots, other
immigrants from France had also begun to purchase lots in this neighborhood that would
become known as Frenchtown due to its decades -long high concentration of French-speaking
residents.
The 1910 federal census records and the 1916 Louisville directory appear to show the Brunet
family living in this location. Leonce Brunet worked as a coal miner.
The Boulder County website and the 1948 County Assessor card both give 1908 as the date of
construction. Boulder County has at times been found to have been in error with respect to the
dates of construction of Louisville properties, so other evidence is looked to. In this situation,
Brunet purchased the lots in 1908 and there is evidence that his family lived in the house in
1
