In my five years as Mayor and previous twelve years on City Council, I have
never experienced an event that has enveloped our City - '_
such as the death of our/my beloved friend John Breaux. None
of us can claim exclusivity to the friendship of John , nor should
we. John wouldn't want that type of parochialism. In truth, John
was a friend to many of us, not only in Louisville, but in Lafay-
ette as well.
John's untimely passing raises any number of questions in my
mind especially about fairness: why did he have to be on US 287
truth
is that I have to discard my anger, dismay, disbelief, and rather focus upon the posi-
tives of John's life. Did anyone ever see John when he wasn't smiling? I know that
his smile is inextricably etched in my mind and the many pictures that allow us to
remember John.
How do we preserve John's memory? Many of you have put forth ideas for prop-
erly remembering John. As a community, we need to collectively assimilate several
of those ideas and implement them. None of us have a monopoly on good ideas,
especially to honor John. Whatever we do to preserve John's memory, let us do it
well and be inclusive!!
Clearly John made our community better by acts of kindness, graciousness,

In January the City implemented a single-hauler refuse, recyclables, and com-
postables collection program and signed a contract with Western Disposal
goals of the program are to reduce the number of refuse collec-
tion vehicles on neighborhood streets and improve the City's recycling rates.
program only covers singlejamily homes that are not in a homeowners association with
its own refuse contract.
program will start June 4, 2009 and includes weekly collection of refuse
(l11Ursdays) and bi-weekly collection of recyclables and compostables. Residents
will receive separate carts for refuse, recyclables, and compostables. Information
regarding options on cart sizes, what types of materials may be placed in each waste
stream, and related information will be available in the near future. Additionally,
a public open house will be held April 16 (6:30 PM at the Recreation Center) to
explain the program in greater detail and answer specific questions.

City of Louisville - www.ci.louisville.co.us
