Originally, John Balent, a saloonkeeper on Front Street and the owner of
the Louisville ball field, was the person who built the house at 829 Lincoln. Balent borrowed
money from Zang Brewing Company, which owned his saloon building. Due to his becoming
overextended and the advent of Prohibition in 1916, Zang Brewing Company took ownership of
829 Lincoln between 1915 and 1927. Balent was able to make payments on his loan and get
back the ownership of 829 Lincoln in 1927. During the time of the ownership by Zang and the
second period of ownership by the Balent family, the house was rented out.
History of Pleasant Hill Addition
The subdivision in which this house is located, Pleasant Hill Addition, was platted in 1894. The
subdivision was developed in the name of Orrin Welch, the half-brother of Charles C. Welch.
Charles Welch was the person most responsible for the establishment of Louisville in 1878 after
he established the first coal mine in what would become Louisville in 1877. Orrin Welch is not
known to have ever lived in Colorado, and it is Charles C. Welch who is thought to have been
the de facto developer.
Balent Family's First Ownership, 1906-1915; Date of Construction
The first known residents of 829 Lincoln were members of the Balent family, but it is not clear
when they moved in or exactly how long they lived there.
In 1906, developer Orrin Welch, through Charles C. Welch, conveyed ownership of the lots at
829 Lincoln to John Balent (1867-1949). (His family pronounces the name Ba-lant', with the
emphasis on the second syllable.)
1
