'O J;_ (;arc: Gf I'RLo.m.v R L0.1.1( Ri ycf :lf II:I; PI_i v Si n)
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
here are a number of improvements which would improve the sustainability of the golf
course operation at Coal Creek Golf Course. One of the most noticeable and most
beneficial conservation opportunities would come from the installation of a more efficient
irrigation system which would allow the flexibility and control to place irrigation water where
it is specifically required. New more efficient irrigation heads with more uniform spacing
would allow the maintenance staff to more closely monitor and control the application of
water to avoid over watering and turf damage.
Iln addition, the master plan identifies a number of areas where turf grasses could be
converted to low- maintenance grass species. These would include areas near No. 1 tee
and green, 4 tee, 5 tee, 9 tee, 14 green and 15 tee. Turfgrass conversion areas would
utilize shorter native and non native grasses such as fescue, Prairie Dropseed and Buffalo
grass. The conversion of these native and low- maintenance areas would conserve water,
reduce chemical and fertilizer inputs, reduce weekly mowing and provide additional habitat
for ground dwelling birds, rodents and insects.
N
Additio "f a. e I ve environmental sustainability
include e inst: lation of an irrigation weather station to
monitor a d reduce water consumption, the installation of bird
houses and bat houses, the supplemental use of skylights and/
or solar panels for the maintenance and clubhouse facilities
and the use of porous paving materials at the clubhouse area.
Audubon International provides information and certification of
golf courses seeking to improve environmental stewardship.
Visit their website at www.auduboninternational.org.
AUDUBON
INTERNATIONAL
HElFoxrNonev GOLF COURSE ARCHITECTS P.!(i1. 13 Ocrrr ci, 17, 2011
