Antique Safe: Last month, Jean Morgan, as a member of the public, requested that the
Commission discuss the issue of the conservatorship and display of the old Louisville city
safe, which is currently in storage at City Shops. It is believed that the safe was purchased
by the town in the 1890s. It was used until 2006 in City Hall. It is still owned by the City.
Bridget brought a report and estimate from a professional conservator who estimated costs
for preservation at between $3,000 and $7,500 based on different levels of conservation
that could be done. She noted that the Commission in 2008 used its funds to pay for this
estimate.
There are several ways this money could be raised and a grant is one possibility for funding
restoration. Discussion turned to whether such a large artifact could reasonably be
exhibited. Jean stated as a member of the public that she would to see it displayed at City
Hall. City Representatives were unsure whether there would be space for it there. After
considerable discussion it was decided that at this time, the best course of action is to
make sure the safe is stored so that its condition remains stable until such time as a space
for exhibiting the safe becomes available. Beth stated that she will contact City Shops
about safe storage.
E. Chairperson's Report. Dan Mellish mentioned the recent Historic Preservation proposal to
make available to commercial buildings the same sort of historic preservation grants as are
currently available to residences. It is under consideration by City Council at this time. He
also announced that Diane Marino and Sean Moynihan will be leaving the Commission
when their terms expire at the end of the year and expressed profound thanks for their
service.
F.
