Historical Commission
Minutes
November 16, 2011
4. Payment of $1,250 to Marion Junior for the holiday ornament fundraiser. Bridget
Bacon noted that since Marion Junior is currently taking orders for ornaments from past
years, with the intention that these sales also benefit the Commission, it will likely be
necessary for the Commission to approve an additional payment to her in mid-year.
5. After discussion, the Commission decided not to provide outdoor refreshments during
the Parade of Lights.
After discussion, the Commission was generally supportive of funding a limited participation in the
State’s upcoming photo digitization pilot project, which would meet both the Museum’s mission
and its need, but more information is needed before an amount can be specified. Digitizing 100
photos of various sizes was discussed.
D. Continued Discussion of Possible Future Capital Campaign.
Sally and Jennifer had an action to research capital fundraising. Jennifer distributed notes taken
from the book “Fundraising for the Small Museum” by Salvatore Cilella, and Sally reviewed the
most important points with the group. A successful capital campaign requires a solid strategic
plan for the Museum, solid leadership, a strong, active and committed board who contributes both
time and money toward the campaign, pace-setting leadership gifts, a worthwhile project, a case
statement to communicate the message, and a realistic, well-executed campaign. After
discussion, the Commission agreed to take up the topic again in January. Bridget noted that a
copy of the book has been purchased for the Museum and Commission, and can be borrowed by
Commission members.
E.Chairperson’s Report.
As the Chairperson was absent, there was no report.
F. Close Fundraising Board Meeting.
VII.
Meeting as Advisory Board for the City of Louisville
A. Report from the Director of Library and Museum Services:
1. Beth reported that the City budget has been approved, and the Museum Coordinator
position will be upgraded to full time beginning in 2012 with 30 hours a week being
dedicated to the Museum and 10 to historic preservation research for the Planning
Department. The Commission is extremely pleased and is looking forward to making
the Museum more accessible to the public. The City will survey the public via the
Louisville Public Library Web Page and through hard copy surveys about which
additional hours they would like to have the Museum open besides Wednesdays and
Saturdays.
2. The “On The Same Page” program is now complete and is to be offered again next
year. The program was extremely well received and came in under budget.
3. The Weather Exhibit from the Space Science Institute is now up in the Library. It is
extremely impressive. The Louisville Library will beta test the next three NSF grant-
funded exhibits the Institute develops.
4. The new sign is up at the Museum and the security system will be in before the end
of the year. For the next meeting, Jennifer will draft a letter from the Commission to
thank the City for improvements to the Museum and its staffing level.
B. Museum Coordinator’s Report:
Approval of Deeds of Gifts from donors
1..
