3
Topic Name: Core Community Values
Idea Title: Our Livable Small Town Feel
Idea Detail: I think our livable small town feel is one of Louisville's core community values.
Idea Author: Katie C
Number of Seconds 17
Number of Comments 4
Comment 1: Agree w/ previous posts about differentiating between the good and "bad"
aspects of a small town. For me, the small town feel boils down to knowing that when I go to
Street Faire, I will run into people I know. | By Drew B
Comment 2: I think several other ideas are incorporated in this. A sense of safety walking the
streets is a small town value. Having the ability to actually communicate with your neighbors
on issues that affect everyone in the community is a small town value. I was struck when I first
moved here that a place with such a small town feel would consider itself a city, but came to
realize it's the values, not the form of government that make the difference. If it values the
personal touches, the sense of history, the neighborliness, the sense of safety among friends,
that the people value, the government structure is incidental. So long as the local government
is not seeing itself as required to impose or force certain values on the citizens, we're fine. I
don't think most people here mean it to convey (I also came from a small town) narrow-
mindedness or nosiness about everyone else's business. It's the warmth of a non-urban
setting that people appreciate. | By Eva K
Comment 3: I have concerns with the words “small town” – does this oversimplify things? –
Coming from a Midwest small town there are some aspects of a small town that are not
necssisarily desirable. Better to define the aspects of small town that we like. Some of those
may be:
olivability
ocommunity oriented
oa sense of closeness (tight knit)
odistinct boundaries
ounderstandable
oit’s own identity (unique)
olikely to know your neighbor
oquality of life
ofriendly (neighborly)
