City Council
Study Session Summary
May 22, 2012
Page 4of7
• Work with City staff to promote healthy horticultural practices in public and
private landscapes. HFAB complimented Joe Stevens and Chris Lichty on
their helpfulness.
• Provide educational horticulture opportunities for the community.
HFAB Accomplishments:
• Electricity installed at the gazebo at the Arboretum — the goal here is to
eventually build a restroom building that would support the Arboretum,
skate park and in -link rink, and then also make the Arboretum a venue for
citizens to reserve and use for special events.
• Worked with Parks Project Manager to complete landscape around the
Arboretum gazebo.
• Continue to monitor tree preservation guidelines — HFAB is concerned
when there are scrape -offs in old town what happens to the trees. They
would like to address this down the road.
• HFAB supports the Pedestrian Master Plan. The Planning Department
presented the pedestrian plan to the Board and the Board was able to
comment on portions of the Plan.
• For the third year, Friends of the Arboretum sponsored a lecture series on
horticulture- related topics. Carol O'Meara presented Hot Pots and Cool
Containers — How to Get the Most Out of Your Gardening Along the Front
Range. The lecture series will return in 2013.
• Arbor Day Tree Planting on April 19, 2012 at Louisville Middle School.
HFAB extended their thanks to Councilmember Susan Loo, Mayor Pro
Tem Hank Dalton, and Councilmember Emily Jasiak for coming out to
support this event.
Drought Update: Stage 1 drought possible. Deciduous and conifers are stressed
especially if they have not been watered during the winter. City Manager
Fleming added that the City is asking residents to conserve and monitor their
water usage. There are several things that residents can do to "slow the flow"
and that is to schedule a water audit, there are rebates for certain appliances and
toilets and the City's graduated rate structure helps citizens conserve.
2012 Goals:
• Continue the educational lecture series
• Increase awareness of the Louisville Arboretum
• Investigate Social Media for HFAB and Friends of the Arboretum
• Continue to move forward with completing the Arboretum, and work to get
permanent restrooms built at the Arboretum that could also support the
skatepark and the in -line rink.
