City Council
Study Session Summary
August 28, 2012
• 300 new sprinkler heads — installation underway (Ken would like to see
this project move faster and asked the City to provide a backhoe to
Western Golf as Western Golf is using summer hires, to dig trenches).
• 80 new trees to be planted — plan to be reviewed on September 20 at the
next GCAB meeting with planting scheduled for fall of this year
• Receiving positive feedback from golfers on the improvements.
Improvements on the course are making a difference for play of golf
• Rounds up 12% compared to 2011
• Divots and Dining growing — 40 people attended the last event. This event
draws golfers and non - golfers, families and young people to the course,
and the event is growing with each time. The next Divots and Dining is
tentatively scheduled for October 5th. Lisa Norgard will keep everyone
posted. Western Golf provided root beer floats at the last event.
• Western Golf replaced the carpet on the outside patio
• Planning has begun on the clubhouse restrooms and other ADA
deficiencies.
• Western Golf has put a lot of resources towards fixing problems and
making improvements to the irrigation system. Work has been done to
clear drains and fix areas of flooding.
• Landscaping around the golf course has been improved.
• Clubhouse was painted in 2010
• Two benches to be installed this fall if men's and ladies leagues will assit
with funding.
• Sand bunker maintenance has improved playing conditions
• Clubhouse ADA compliance issues have been identified and an action
plan and design improvements identified — plan is to install an elevator on
the east side of the clubhouse for a wheel chair lift. Elevator more cost -
effective than a ramp.
Comments:
• How can we incentivize Western Golf so that projects are completed in
the short time left in the season?
• The golf course uses reclaimed water and the reclaimed water is stored in
3 basins at the golf course which have liners that are over 20 years old.
The liners have a couple years of life remaining.
• Reclaimed water didn't hit the golf course till about July 4th this year. What
is the reasoning for that and could reclaimed water be used late in the
summer? If the City is in a drought next year, the City should try to get
reclaimed water to the golf course earlier. City Manager Fleming thinks
the late arrival of the reclaimed water has to do with water rights.
• Has there been any change in marketing the golf course and the player
memberships? Ken Gambon confirmed it's a good deal for golfers to
purchase player memberships.
