Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
September 17, 2012
Robinson stated the residential density at north Main Street is already being addressed
through existing projects, such as Steel Ranch South, and future density, such as
Safeway redevelopment and the Arnold property to the east.
Speier agreed with the need for adjacent density for an urban park to work.
La Grave did not agree with the idea of the need for additional residential density to
enjoy a park. He said the biggest issue might be accessibility since it is fronted on all
sides by right of way. He added some thoughts about density and redevelopment of the
Safeway property.
Robinson asked the HPC what their thoughts were on the Cultural Element of the
Comprehensive Plan.
Stewart asked how the framework plan promotes preservation in the Downtown
Louisville area.
Robinson stated the Downtown Louisville area is being shown as an Urban Center and
there aren’t any elements of the Urban Center which would have a negative impact on
preservation of downtown. He added there are more developable areas on the east
side of the tracks which could release the redevelopment pressures on Downtown
Louisville.
Stewart encouraged staff to develop gateway concepts for Downtown Louisville in the
Comprehensive Plan.
Stewart inquired ifthe Comprehensive Plan was still going to be designed to include
policies and goals.
Robinson answered in the affirmative.
Stewart asked what the next steps are.
Robinson stated we could take comments now or at the next meeting or allow
comments to be provided via Envision Louisville.
Stewart stated he would rather take this home and email comments later. He
recommended the HPC should bring back comments to the October meeting.
Lewis commented on the Heritage Component stating we should make sure our
language is consistent throughout our existing and proposed policies.
Discussion – CLG Grant Requests
Robinson presented the item and asked the HPC if they had any projects they would
like to include in the November round of CLG Grant requests. He suggested an update
to our existing intensive level survey for the Downtown area, and a preservation master
plan.
