0
Issues to cover are:
• Maintenance
• Usage
• Future planting of the Arboretum
• Long -term planning
• Cacti garden
• Should shrubs be added?
• Grass demonstration plots
• Education (understory plantings, best species, etc., journaling by season,
plant to develop a good history)
• Signage — Chris has installed a lot of signage this past year. Says that lots
of trees are not planted in locations specified.
• Everyone may come in to the next meeting (January) with a mock
mission statement. Mike and Theresa will try to collaborate on one — all
others are encouraged to e-mail any thoughts to augment their efforts.
Chris may also apply for grant money for the arboretum next year.
Chris is to produce an updated drawing of the arboretum with all that is there as of now.
Board would like a colored, dry - mounted drawing and post it at the Rec Center with the
other city drawings.
Fred felt that costs to implement master plan need to be rolled up to present a total cost,
however annually we would be requesting incremental amounts to implement in a phased
manner.
Why does Louisville need an Arboretum? Education, scientific (what works, what
doesn't in our environment), etc. Inertia may be provided by obtaining another
organization's master plan such as CSU's.
Susan voiced negative issues with group design. Fred suggested a competition for design
— group nixed it. Mike suggested adding the arboretum master plan design as a candidate
for the CSU senior design project along with our median design. We would need to be
ready by the end of February if a student were to choose this project. The student could
create the drawings. The Chatfield Arboretum and Rob Proctor, CSU Arboretum and
James Klett, Regis and Pat Hayward may also be resources for master plan content.
Todo:
• Susan to contact Grant Reid to see if this project could be a design project for
Spring 2005 at CSU.
• Mission statement based on current status and where we're going from here and a
detailed statement on use and purpose of the arboretum
• Define plan for maintenance.
• Theresa will call the contacts listed above for the three area arboretums to see if
any info is readily available, esp. in writing.
These must be done by mid- February. What is our anticipated whole project timeline for
planning? Budget planning for the city is in July. June is felt to be a good date to wrap
up the master plan process.
