1
page 3
Jennifer brought up an idea which might educate city officials to one of the purposes of
the Arts & Humanities Council. It was proposed that council members could contact
either Mike Mohr, (city council liason to the library project), or Randy Carnival (liason to
the recreation center project), in an attempt to raise awareness about what the Arts &
' Humanities council can do to enhance city projects. It was discussed that most of the
city officials probably are not aware of the positive contribution we could make in terms
of providing technical assistance, (e.g. where to put a kiln) proposing space for
' performance or display, or writing grants which would allow us to acquire art pieces
which would otherwise be cost prohibitive.
' It was agreed that Jennifer will contact Randy Carnival, and let him know that John and
herself want to know when work sessions will be held for the recreation center so that we
can mostly listen, and if and opportunity is seen where we feel we could contribute
' positively to the esthetics of the building, offer suggestions and propose ideas that the
Arts & Humanities council could accomplish for the benefit of Louisville residents. In
John's absence, Carolyn offered that he would probably want to be involved in this work
' group more than the library's, and Jennifer and Joanne offered to serve as
support/backup people to the council's function in the work group. Carolyn agreed to
contact Nelda Mohr and remind her of the council's interest in the library work group
meeting's. Mary would like to represent the council at the library work group meetings
as well.
It was decided to table John's ideas of possible projects for the council until the next
meeting when he can give them the enthusiasm and credit they deserve.
The council discussed lobbying our city councilmen about the County Commissioners
Public Hearing on use of the County Cultural Facilities Tax District Money on Thursday,
August 24th, and also offer that Louisville does have the potential to offer some
I culturally enriching and economically beneficial projects to it's residents. On a grandiose
scale, Aspen's summer cultural events were mentioned, and closer to home, Loveland's
beautiful use of sculptures was discussed.
A discussion about a,logo for the Arts and Humanities Council, and possible contest for
it's creation, was tabled until our next meeting.
Joann offered to contact a an associate of hers, Dr. Qualley, who is past president of the
' National Art Education Association, to solicit ideas about lobbying local government to
fund art programs. Dr. Qualley may be able to give the council ideas in terms of dealing
with the County Commissioners choice of dealing with Tax District Funds.
1
Because the meeting had passed the two hour mark, the budget proposal session may be
called as a special meeting if Carolyn feels council's input is needed. Otherwise, to save
time, she will itemize expenses and submit appropriate material to the IRS to hasten
establishment of our tax exempt status.
The motion was made by Mary to adjourn the meeting and seconded by Jennifer.
