Open Space Advisory Board
Minutes
th
February 12, 2014
the Coal Creek Trail through the Golf Course, and a short connection along
Dillon.
XI. Discussion: Wayfinding
The board decided to postpone this agenda item until the next meeting.
XII. Discussion: 2013 Volunteer & Education Summary
The Adopts and the Raptor Monitoring Programs were the most popular Open
Space volunteer programs in 2013. The Adopts program had 40 volunteers.
The Raptor Program had 13 volunteers who put in the most hours of any
volunteer group. The Bullhead Gulch photo-points volunteers were new in 2013
and there are plans to expand this opportunity in 2014.There were 207 hours of
volunteering for flood clean up. Youth Corps worked with Open Space Staff last
summer and will again in 2014. The current plan is to have them build a floating
wetland for Hecla Lake, perform prairie dog burrow counts, perform mechanical
weed control, perform maintenance tasks and develop a chi
program among other things. The volunteer numbers are staying stable. Ember
repeated concern about requiring volunteers to submit their social security
numbers to the City in order to do a background check. This policy has deterred
somevolunteers from participating in the past and has made many others
uncomfortable. The exception to this policy is for one-time group events (e.g. the
flood clean up event). There is a presentation of volunteer numbers and hours in
the agenda packet. Ember testified as to the value of the volunteer program. It
represents a lot of staff work, but provides valuable services, citizen education,
and a sense of ownership for the citizens.
The total number of people reached by Open Space education outreach in 2013
was 424. The total staff prep time was 68.5 hours. A table of the 2013 education
programs and other data is included in the agenda packet.
XIII. Discussion Items for the Next Meeting on March 12th.
1) 2013 OSAB Accomplishments & 2014 OSAB Goals

2) Subcommittee for Social Surveys for Environmental Studies
Ember has been contacted by a professor from CU Boulder who teaches an
Environmental Studies course, and wants to have her undergrad students
administer social surveys on environmental issues for the City of Louisville.
Ember gave her some potential topics relating to the City of Louisville Open
Space. She and/or her students may come to a future meeting to propose a
project involving a citizen survey. The board expressed its enthusiasm for
helping with such a potentially mutually beneficial project.
3) Wayfinding
The board moved this agenda item from this meeting to next meeting due to time
limitation.
XIV. Adjourn
Linda moved to adjourn. Laura seconded. The motion was unanimous. The
meeting was adjourned at 9:59pm.
6
