Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
March 17, 2014
Watson asked how we went from 146 to 6.
Robinson stated the first cut was to 88 and then HR did another cut to 22 focusing on historic
preservation. He stated the Planning Staff then narrowed the 22 down to 6.
Watson asked if small town preservation as considered.
Robinson stated preservation, planning and design were all considered but not necessarily
small town preservation.
Haley asked what the public input would be for the preservation master plan.
Fahey said there were complaints about the way the Comprehensive Plan was handled, so the
public should have buy in at the beginning of the process.
Echohawk stated the consultant could act as a facilitator as well
Robinson stated he appreciated the direction.
Discussion — 2014 Goals
Stewart stated he and Fahey worked on some ideas for the list and collaborated with Robinson
as well.
Discussion ensued on the process.
Stewart stated he would like to see the Austin Niehoff house restored.
Fahey said she would like to see more public outreach.
Watson stated he is unsure if he wants to narrow down a period of significance, primarily
because of the asbestos siding on the Austin Niehoff house but also because there is going to
be a lot of structures available for preservation when they hit 50 years old, but not every
structure is considered historic.
Robinson asked if the commission as happy with the goals.
Watson said it looks good but more can be added if we see the need.
Discussion — Grain Elevator
Stewart stated at the last grain elevator meeting was a discussion about tours. Because the
project still needs to go before City Council the group was worried about giving a group tour of
public officials.
Robinson stated the tour could be posted as a public meeting but there shouldn't be any group
discussions during the tour.
