SUBJECT: ANNUAL REPORT — LOUISVILLE YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD <br />DATE: APRIL 22, 2014 <br />PAGE 2 OF 4 <br />November 2013: <br />David proposed idea of getting teenagers to understand the amount of greenhouse <br />gases they could save by carpooling to school. Idea was discussed that there could be <br />a day in the spring where Fairview and Monarch could compete to reduce the amount of <br />cars that are brought to school. Thus the beginning plans for the Eco Smackdown were <br />formed. <br />November's volunteer project was with the Community Food Share. Board members <br />signed up for shifts and collected food for the organization on two days. <br />December 2013: <br />Eco Smackdown planning: Bonnie and Katie got OK from Fairview administration. David <br />and Mandy got OK from Monarch administration. <br />YAB members helped with the Dessert and Story time with Santa program at the <br />Recreation Center on December 11th, and sold the Dear Louisville books at the craft <br />sale the same night. <br />January 2014: <br />Planning continued for the Eco Smackdown Challenge with discussions about publicity, <br />prizes, asking other organizations like student council for assistance, and detailed <br />logistics of the challenge. <br />YAB Members volunteered their time at a Soup Kitchen on Thursday, Jan. 16th located <br />at the First Methodist Church in Boulder. <br />February 2014: <br />Dear Louisville: The board decided to stop formally selling the Dear Louisville books. <br />Ideas arose to donate books to elementary, middle, and high school libraries. Mandy <br />agreed to collect all the money together and make the final donation to the Heritage <br />House. <br />Eco Smackdown: YAB members presented their poster and slogan designs for the <br />event and a winner was selected. Winners: Main Title: Monarch vs. Fairview Eco - <br />Smackdown: walk, bike, bus, carpool. Slogan: Cut the Cars Cut the Carbon. <br />Planning continues concerning stickers for the vent, further assistance from other clubs <br />and school groups, and requesting prize donations. An official date of April 15th is <br />selected for the event. <br />February's volunteer event was to help out at the Royal Ball on Saturday, Feb. Stn <br />March 2014: <br />Planning for the Eco Smackdown focuses on poster printing and distribution, stickers for <br />participants, securing prizes for random giveaways to students from the winning school, <br />CITY COUNCIL COMMUNICATION <br />3 <br />
