City Council
Meeting Minutes
April 15, 2014
The Sports Complex/Harney - Lastoka Property: It was determined this location is not a
good site as we would need to get the approvals of all the parties, including Boulder
County, Lafayette and CDOT. Additionally, the sports complex is already booked for a
tournament on the July 4th weekend.
The field behind the Recreation Center /Police Department: The site is very confined by
the surrounding houses and roads which may limit the size of shell used for the
fireworks. Some of the area is irrigated (the arboretum) but much of it is not. The same
issue arises related to the weather leading up to the event.
Joining Lafayette in their July 4th Celebration: The Lafayette Chamber of Commerce
puts on the Lafayette July 4th fireworks at Waneka Lake. The Lafayette Chamber is
willing to work with the City on a joint event. Louisville could contribute some or all of the
July 4th funding to the Lafayette Chamber to help with fireworks, transportation, and
other items. This would be a convenient option for our residents and should Louisville
not a have a fireworks show it is likely many Louisville, residents would attend the
Lafayette festivities.
The last option would be to cancel the 2014 fireworks and save those funds for the 2015
show as has been done in other years due to drought.
Staff requested Council direction on moving to another location in Louisville or
cancelling the event and saving the City $16,000 in 2014 or using some of the budget
for a joint event with the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce.
COUNCIL COMMENT
Council member Loo did not support having fireworks at Monarch High School. She
favored cancelling the fireworks for this year. She noted there was an indication there
was a need for flowers for the downtown and around town. She was not opposed to
directing some of the money for flowers or saving all the money for a really large
celebration for the reopening of the Golf Course.
Mayor Pro Tem Dalton agreed with Council member Loo, supporting her
recommendation.
Council member Stolzmann stated the 4th of July celebration is very special to the
people of the community and makes Louisville special. She felt some of the options
offered by staff were worth pursuing. She did not favor giving the money to Lafayette to
put toward their fireworks. She suggested making a festival event in one of the large
parking lots along McCaslin Boulevard.
Council member Keany supported foregoing the fireworks this year and having two
fireworks celebrations next year; one to mark the reopening of the Coal Creek Golf
Course and the second for the 4th of July celebration.
