Library Board of Trustees
Meeting Minutes—DRAFT
May 8, 2014
phase could be to new apartment complexes and new home developments. Further
evaluation is needed to determine which channels are the best to reach these potential
users. As a first step, Paul will review the last City survey to see if he can use the data
to make recommendations. Paul will call Meredyth Muth to see if there is additional
data to filter with respect to the percentage that never use the Library. The Board
unanimously agreed to continue work on this.
C.Program Evaluations
Beth noted that one of the issues we seem to be hearing about more and more from
other municipal library directors is that circulation is either flat or down, but
programming is up. Annual surveys, such as the one conducted by the State Library, are
looking for more outcome measures, which is often difficult to obtain. One way to
accomplish this is a simple program evaluation. CU does this for their programs here at
the Library, and it seems to get good response from participants. There is a Library
Director’s retreat later this month, and obtaining program and service outcome
measures will be discussed.
IX.Director’s Report
A.Operations and Services
Beth reported the following:
1)Programming Statistics
The Number of programs hasn’t changed significantly but attendance is up
dramatically. In 2012, the Library began counting adults that accompany
children but that doesn’t account for the total increase.
Data collection for 2014 has changed so that one-on-one services are no longer
counted as programs
2)Summer Reading
This year the Library is launching a badge-based incentive program for all
participants. Feedback from parents who have seen the preliminary information
has been positive.
Leslie and Paul each made a suggestion for activities that could be included as
activities to help earn badges:
Donate / volunteer at Community Food Share
Locate a Little Library
3)Zome Tools
Beth passed around Zome Tools kit and noted that she and several staff
members met with the creator. The Library will offer programming around
Zome Tools in July program for adults and in the fall for kids.
4)New Library Resource: Learn4Life (L4L)
The Library will acquire L4L from Gale, a long-time vendor of subscription
databases and online learning tools. L4L courses are free, instructor-led classes
covering a wide range of topics including personal enrichment, professional
