IV. AUDIENCES <br />Primary Target Groups <br />Residents — The City of Boulder's population is approximately 101,000 people, <br />according to the 2012 estimates issued by the U.S. Census Bureau. The age distribution <br />is dominated by 19 -64 year olds, accounting for nearly 77 percent of the city's <br />population, followed by the 0 -18 age group (13.9 percent) and 65+ age group (8.9 <br />percent). The racial composition is predominantly white (88 percent) followed by <br />Hispanic/Latino (8.7 percent) and Asian (4.7 percent). <br />According to the 2010 Census, over 73 percent of the city's population had earned a <br />bachelor's degree or higher, more than twice the state average. Less than half (49.5 <br />percent) own homes. 21.4 percent of residents are below the poverty line. <br />Business Community — Known as one of the hottest start-up communities in the country, <br />Boulder is home to diverse companies and supports a concentration of national research <br />labs, energy and high tech companies, and robust outdoor recreation, tourism, and <br />sustainable living industries. Boulder's economy has grown over the past 15 years and <br />has remained relatively stable throughout the recession. Today, Boulder has <br />approximately 6,700 employers and 90,000 employees (approximately 100,000 if self - <br />employed persons are added.) Of those, approximately 554 are considered "primary <br />employers." <br />Employees - The City of Boulder employs approximately 1,200 employees and <br />several hundred seasonal employees who work in departments throughout the city. Just <br />under half of all employees have regular access to e-mail services for <br />communications. <br />Other Target Groups - Public segments: City Council, City boards and commissions, <br />other municipal governments, county and state legislators, and Boulder's <br />Congressional delegation. <br />News Media - Media relations are developed through personal interactions with <br />reporters and editors, distribution of news releases and media advisories, planning and <br />conducting news conferences when appropriate, placement of stories in various media <br />and other methods. The city's Communication Division assists individual reporters in <br />answering questions, responding to Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) requests and <br />providing sources and information, as well as actively distributing news and <br />information. <br />Prominent print media outlets that cover the City of Boulder include the Daily Camera, <br />Denver Post, ABC, NB S, CBS, FOX, Inside Boulder News, Boulder County Business <br />Report, and Boulder Weekly. <br />13 <br />
