Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
July 21, 2014
Fasick stated the social history carries this structure. She stated the structure itself
would not qualify, but with improvements, it could be restored.
Haley stated the purpose for tonight is to determine if the applicant should receive the
grant for the assessment.
Fahey made a motion to approve grant funding for the building assessment.
Fasick seconded the motion.
The motion was approved 4 to 0.
La Grave left the meeting.
PUBLIC HEARING — 540 County (Grain Elevator) Alteration Certificate
Trice presented the information from staff's report. She stated this application is a request to
allow for skylights on the southern roof of the Grain Elevator. She stated staff agrees with the
skylights to provide needed natural light and believes the skylights will not have a detrimental
impact on the historic structure.
Stewart asked if it was 3 or 4 skylight.
Robinson answered 4.
Applicant's presentation
Erik Hartronft, architect, spoke on the project and reiterated there will be 4 skylights. He stated
they took rhythm of existing roof joists and slid the skylights into the existing joists. He added
the natural light from the skylights will be appreciated by the tenants. He stated the cost of the
skylights will not be funded through the HPF.
Fahey asked if the direct sunlight from the skylight will have a detrimental effect on the stacked
plank wall.
Hartronft stated the Low E element of the skylight will provide necessary diffusion. He added
the natural light will actually highlight the stacked plank wall in a positive "light ".
Fasick inquired how easy it would be to remove the skylights if they want to be removed in the
future.
Hartronft stated they are leaving the joists so the skylights can be undone.
Stewart stated this is a precedence setting request since the board has never dealt with
skylights in an historical structure. He asked why Hartronft thought it was okay to modify a roof
with openings rather than a wall.
Hartronft stated roof materials are modified all the time and easier to undone in the future.
