Open Space Advisory Board
Minutes
August 13th, 2014
notes on the 2013 request, and to discuss whether or not to change the requests for
2014 submittal for 2015.
TRAILS:
The first trail request is a connection between the soon -to -be -built Highway 36
underpass at Davidson Mesa, and the Mayhoffer - Singletree Trail network. County
suggested that they would support building it, if Louisville started the dialog with the
communities of Superior and Marshall. Laura asked if there was anything we as a board
could do to move this dialog along. Ember suggested that a joint meeting with
Superior's advisory board might help.
The second request is the proposed north -south trail along 104 St. The county wants to
see the City put in safe street crossings before the trail goes in.
The third trail would connection would connect Coal Creek Trail to Carolyn Holmberg
Preserve at Rock Creek by going through Jointly owned Warembourg Open Space.
However, to make the connection easements or acquisition of some privately held land
would be necessary.
The board did not want to change any of these trail requests.
PROPERTY:
The four property parcels the City requested were not included into the County's packet
of responses, so we don't know what the County's responses to the property requests
we re.
1) Mayhoffer Property— the board agreed to keep it the number one priority.
2) Hwy 42 and Coal Creek— The board agreed to keep it the number two priority.
3) Hwy 287 and Coal Creek aka. "Creek Side" —The board agreed to keep it the number
three priority.
4) West of Davidson Mesa —Ember thought the odds of this property getting funded
were low (since it was sandwiched between City of Boulder land and City of Louisville
land). The board felt that the 96th Street agricultural parcel (SE corner of Dillon and
Hwy 42) was a higher priority and should be submitted instead. Ember said she would
switch these and submit to Council for approval.
X. Discussion Item: Memorial Benches
Historically, memorial benches have been installed at the request of families and
individuals in a piecemeal fashion. This creates both a lot of hours of work for Open
Space staff, and a haphazard placement of benches and their style. Ember is working
on streamlining this process to standardize the process. Her intention is to place the
benches first, then let families pay a flat fee to dedicate them as memorial benches,
selecting from the standing stock. When all the benches are claimed, no more can be
installed. Placement will be evenly spaced, level, and with clear sight lines.
There are two types of benches, metal "park style" benches and sandstone benches.
Ember proposed keeping to a standard style of benches within parcels (e.g. currently
there are sandstone benches on Davidson Mesa and black metal benches on Harper
Lake). Does OSAB want sandstone benches on the Coal Creek Corridor? Tom asked
about cost and durability. Ember said the sandstone benches on Davidson have been
very durable over the last few years. Tom asked about their footings. Ember said that
6
