Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
October 20, 2014
"Rex" on the screen was important. She recommended "The Madera Grill at the Rex" or
something like that.
Echohawk agreed the "Rex" was important for the building and the conservation
easement. She recommended just reusing the marquee to accomplish what he wanted.
Stoneman stated he did not believe keeping "Rex" would work for his rebranding.
Haley stated as important as rebranding is important she stated "Rex" was an iconic
part of downtown and something we don't want to lose. She liked the idea of using
"...at the Rex" for the new name. She would be willing to let the marquee to be
modified.
Fahey agreed with everyone in regards to the "Rex" but thought the marquee could
even be made larger to provide more prominence. She believed the marquee has more
prominence than the screen sign.
Haley stated she believes people are interested in seeing a new restaurant to come in
but would appreciate the Rex to stay on the sign.
Watson asked what the legal steps are required to change the facade.
Trice stated it is very similar to an alteration certificate.
Watson was curious if the REX letters have to stay the same size as they are.
Trice stated the color of the Rex can be changed without need of a modification to the
Conservation Easement. Staff recommends keeping the letters but have them the
same color as he screen.
Watson asked the applicant what he thinks about the REX.
Stoneman asked if the board would prefer the REX to remain on the screen.
Watson stated he believes so. He said City money was spent to create the current look.
Stoneman asked where the name REX came from.
It was the name of a mine.
Haley asked if there could be a temporary sign placed over the REX.
Trice stated temporary signs can only last 60 days.
Haley stated it would be a permanent sign while the new business is operating.
Trice stated that would still require a modification to the Conservation Easement.
