Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
October 20, 2014
Watson stated the applicant can make any changes to the text on the marquee without
a need for an amendment to the conservation easement. He asked staff what other
changes would be needed.
Trice gave detail on what would require a change.
Stoneman stated his primary focus is the change to the screen. He recommended
coming back next month with some additional modifications that might be more
accepted.
Fahey wanted to clarify ownership, especially after the Empire Sign issue.
Stoneman stated he is leasing the building and has a letter from the owner stating his
understanding of the project.
Robinson stated the letter will satisfy the ownership concerns.
Fasick stated she would recommend exploring the change on the screen to focus on the
REX theater while still placing the Madera Grill somewhere on the screen as well.
Echohawk recommends placing "Historic Rex Theater" as well.
Stoneman said it might get too busy, but he will look at some options.
Watson made a motion to continue this request to next month.
Haley seconded the motion.
The motion was passed via voice vote.
PUBLIC HEARING - 1245 Grant and Alteration Certificate (Continued from 9/25)
Watson asked for any conflicts from the board. None were heard.
Trice gave a presentation of the information provided in the packet and gave a detailed
description of the project. She stated there have been some changes to the Lafayette Street
side based on comments received at the last meeting. She stated staff believes the proposed
modifications appear to meet the concerns heard at the last meeting. She added staff
recommends approval of the request.
Cindy and Ramsey Thomas, owners, spoke on behalf of the project and why they are
requesting their proposed design.
Andy Johnson spoke on the details of the architectural design. He stated they are going to
restore the front porch to the original condition. He said the main portion of the house will be
restored as well. He then spoke in detail on the additions they are recommending. He spoke
directly towards how the additions were created and the work that will be involved in improving
or modifying the structure.
