felt that W-470 would help this issue very
much.
Mayor Fauson closed the public hearing and
asked for council comments.
Sackett stated he was delighted to hear that
we have the option to stay in the authority
without having to spend the $8,000. The
legislation is deciding on whether there is
going to be an authority and this will play a
big part before we decide to spend the money.
We have to have the link between the turnpike
and the airport. It is needed for economic
development. The authority is one way to
bring the road to the airport. It may not be
the only way. I think the question should be
brought to the people and let them decide
whether or not they think that economic
development is something that we think W-470
can provide. I suggest that we stay in the
authority with no assessments.
Carnival said there is so much more to gain
by being a member of the authority,
especially if we take this third option of
not given them any money for 1990. If we
close the door on W-470, we close out all of
the options. I feel this is the worst thing
that can happen. At the last meeting we
heard from several of the businesses in town
that relay on economic development of the
committee. This highway would be in the best
interest of the city. I concur with Sackett
to stay in the authority for another year
with no assessments to the city.
Howard understood that if we get out of the
authority it would not change the highway
configuration. We would not have any say so
in the configuration, other than to go to the
voters.
Williams stated that if we withdraw from the
authority we can not do anything as to the
current alignment of that highway. If the
highway would be realigned and we are out of
the authority we would have no say so, unless
in fact it comes into our boundary. If we
are in the authority then we have a right to
veto any proposed realignment for the
highway.
Sackett moved and Carnival seconded to remain
in the authority but pay no assessments.
