Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
February 9, 2015
Stewart stated he believes public outreach is always a good topic because it is always
changing and he believes everyone should be on the same page.
Haley agreed with Stewart because each individual brings a different approach or eye
as to what does and does not work. She added she would need more training on
design review and period style architecture, including Louisville specific architecture.
She would also like to have a better understanding on the history of Louisville including
the major events and families.
Fahey agreed and stated it should be included during orientation when you become a
board member.
Trice stated some of these are sounding more like tools, which is a good segway to
understand what sort of tools would be helpful.
Koertje stated the underlying theme of one discussion at the conference was whether
our board had architects. He said we have in the past had at least 4 architects and we
are now down to two. He thought it might be a good idea to have an on -call architect.
He then added it would be good to dust off the outreach idea of meeting with architects
and builders at open houses to get to applicants to understand there are alternatives to
demolitions.
Stewart stated we should go back to pushing our outreach brochures.
Keortje stated we had a landmarking workshop that heled with a number of landmarks.
Trice asked what changes or improvements of the current process need to be done to
meet our needs.
Stewart stated it would be helpful to have a feasibility analysis, access to a forensic
architecture, and legal advice. He stated having a very accessible website, having
access to research material would be very helpful.
Fahey asked if the brochure of the National Register houses on the website yet.
Trice answered no. She stated the website is still in transition.
Stewart asked if a subcommittee is working on this.
Trice stated yes and mentioned Stewart was on the subcommittee.
Koertje stated it would be good to have contact with other commissions periodically,
such as a sustainability committee.
Haley agrees with Koertje. She stated she has been to three separate boards and
believes they would like to have a collaborative approach as well. She believes this is
all under the umbrella of public outreach, especially since we are doing our master plan
because they can push people to our meetings.
