Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
March 16, 2015
Koertje recommended the new construction be two stories instead of 3 so they didn't
detract from the Grain Elevator.
Watson stated he is not as much concerned about the 3 story element because of the
setback. He asked Hartronft about the height of the existing warehouse to the south.
Hartronft stated it is currently 30 feet and the new addition would put it at 38 feet.
Watson stated he would support the height because it frees the site plan for open area,
such as the green space.
Trice read through the consensus points:
• Green space, not parking
• Grainery (shed) was appreciated
• More contrast between color and material
• The buildings were okay as 3 story because they are limited in area and keep
additional building area on the ground.
Discussion ensued.
Koertje stated he still believed a third story would diminish the impact of the Grain
Elevator.
Stewart stated the consensus is the new buildings are lower than the Grain Elevator.
Update from Staff
Preservation Master Plan
Trice presented the information from staff's report. She stated the following:
• City History subcommittee met with Bridget Bacon
• March 11 50 residents attended the open house and reviewed the timeline of
history
• Customer satisfaction survey is closing on March 17th
• Staff and History Matters is establishing stakeholder interviews.
Haley stated the open house was a lot of fun and it was interactive. She thinks a lot of
people enjoyed it.
Watson stated the neighborhood signs have been very effective.
Fahey enjoyed the visual demonstration shown at the open house. She thought
everyone enjoyed placing notes of what they remember and when.
Haley stated the growth maps should be included in the master plan.
Fahey asked if the master plan will create a mission statement for the HPC.
