IU citiyof
Louisville
Golf Course Advisory Board Minutes
May 182015
COLORADO • SINCE 1878
donated by LL Johnson and one purchased by the City. Fairways 3 and 4 are
being seeded as the rain washed away prior seeding attempts. Overall, the
course modifications coped very well with the rain and the drainage proved
highly successful. Superior reported more damage on their side of HWY36 and
they may need to give more thought to a retention pond strategy. It was noted
that the bunker on hole #3 filled with water due to water table issues and the
pond on hole 11 overflowed into the greenside bunker. The City published a
notice explaining that the sprinklers on Community Park were run during the
rain storm to alleviate the water level on that pond. The Board asked if a
similar process was relevant for the golf course. It was noted that water from
the pond on hole #11 also ran behind the green to a depth of several inches but
did not threaten any homes. Ken G complimented LU on their excellent work in
clearing the creekbed and the scrub from the Goodhue Ditch on hole #3.
o The Board expressed concern that there remain large bare areas on hole #3
and hole #8 and asked why there has been little progress on repair with only 6
weeks left until the re- opening. Joe S responded that LU should be trusted to
have these issues addressed in time. The bare area on #3 is to be re- seeded
with native grass which came as a surprise to the Board. That area had
previously been rough and was often in play. LU has scheduled a truckload of
sod to take care of remaining issues: bent grass sod for the #15 green, the
nursery green and the practice putting green plus sod as needed for the
fairways. The back tee on hole #17 will also be sodded.
o Overall, the playability of the course is good. The tee boxes are coming on
well, the fairways are playable and, except for hole #15, the greens are in good
shape with 3 -4" of root depth. The main issues are the large damaged area of
fairway /rough on holes #3 and 8. For 2015, the greens will not be mowed as
short as normal until fully mature. The starter will be given the responsibility for
ensuring that golfers are briefed on course conditions and restrictions. If
needed, tee times will be limited to 15 minute intervals although this will not
apply to tournaments.
o John Reilly expressed concern that the City is being inflexible in honoring the
outstanding commitments to Summit Club and Peak Players members by
enforcing a restart of privileges on July 1st. John felt that with restricted tee
times and issues with playability, golfers are not getting what they paid for. Joe
S accepted the comments but elected to differ. In some ways (particularly
bunkers) the course will be in better shape than it was at the end of the WGP
tenure.
o Lisa reported that 89 members of the Ladies League have already renewed
their membership — over 80% of the average annual headcount. Don Johnson
reported that 30 Strokers have signed up for 2015.
PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT • 749 MAIN STREET • LOUISVILLE, CO 80027
(303) 335 -4735 FAX (303) 335 -4738
www.louisvilleco.gov
PARKS RECREATION SENIOR SERVICES OPEN SPACE FORESTRY TRAILS GOLF
