Cultural Council
Meeting Minutes
08 June 2015
Page 2of4
City Council Budget retreat is Tuesday, 6/9/2015 at 4:30 pm.
Comments & proposal from Joan Langford — Young Songwriter's Workshop.
Focus — teens in grades 9 - 12, jointly offered through LCC and Library. A small
discussion was held with participants of the April writer's workshop. Two
proposal options presented by Joan: A) one -hour song writing workshops offered
once or twice; or B) On -going weekly class after school four to six times in the
Fall.
Fees to participants would be very low. The students don't have to have in-
coming skills or musical instrument skills.
Request is for LCC to support advertising, outreach, networking and some
funding to support teacher fees. The amount for both proposals aggregated
would be $350. Additionally, the library would be requested to provide support
by way of marketing, space to hold the class, and outreach. Action: LCC
determined to table the discussion for future consideration.
Public Comments — None
Treasurer's Report — Financials are stable since last month. SCFD response is
still pending. Lawrence still needs the paperwork and W -9s from the Young
Writer's workshop; Action: Angie to collect and provide these.
Fundraising and Grants — Suzanne distributed some information and discussed
common practices for arts grant- making. Suzanne has previous experience in
two separate grant- making organizations. For LCC to establish a granting
process a fair amount of infrastructure needs to be established.
By way of context, Lafayette is generally granting about $12,000 /year for arts
programs.
LCC would establish the grant- making process, evaluate applications, make
recommendations to the City Council for awards. Based on city budget timing,
LCC should be ready to discuss future focus and granting process with City
Council in the August annual report.
Action: Suzanne and Meredyth have agreed to provide a straw -man for the LCC
grant program approach, policies, etc. at July's meeting. For example,
supporting separate grant programs for education versus arts should be
considered.
Action: LCC goal is that grant- making approach would be in final form by August
to support annual report to City Council.
-- For Approval --
