menu which will feaiture soups, salads, sandwiches
and potato bar.
Mayor Fauson asked iEor anyone wishing to speak
either in favor of or in opposition to this liquor
license.
Jim Hayden, owner oi: Gentleman Jim's located in
the Centennial Center, spoke to Council with
concern of locating two restaurant liquor licenses
in the same shopping center. Mr. Hayden stated
that it is his opinion that there is no need for
another full servicE~ bar in this area at this
time. Mr. Hayden stsated that it is his opinion
that the granting of: this liquor license will be
"detrimental to the entire business climate of the
area."
Sackett asked Mr. Hayden what he felt the purpose
of a liquor license was and Council's role in
granting one, and wr-y Mr. Hayden feels it is
unfair for Council t:o grant some else a similar
license as to the or-e Council approved for
Gentleman Jim's.
Mr. Hayden responded) by stating that it is his
opinion that there i.s no need for another liquor
license in that shopping center. Mr. Hayden
stated that "this puts these people directly in
competition" with his business. "I've only been
open for five months and I'm barely keeping my
head above water. I don't think it would be in
the best interest of the Centennial Shopping
Center, Mooties, Gentleman Jim's or the City of
Louisville..."
Sackett stated that it is Council's charge to
maintain the integrity of the operation of the
facility, not maintain the financial viability of
the different people holding the licenses.
Williamson stated that a liquor license can not be
denied only because of competition. Considering
the needs of the neighborhood and the desires of
the residents are inter-linked, these determined
by courts of law. "If there are 262 people out
there that think they need another restaurant,
maybe the reasonable needs are being met now."
Anderson stated that Mr. Hayden does bring up a
reasonable point regarding the needs of the
neighborhood and asked Mr. Griffith to explain how
those people signing the petition were approached.
3
