City of Louisville Employee Survey
July 2008
CTo facilitate the creation of composite ratings (an average across multiple items), the results for all
agree-disagree type items are reported on a common scale where zero is the worst possible rating
and 100 is the best possible rating. If everyone reported the"strongly agree,"then the result would
be 100 on the 0-100 scale. An average rating of 67 is equivalent to "somewhat agree," 33 to
"somewhat disagree"and zero to "strongly disagree."The 95% confidence interval around a score
on the 0-100 scale based on all respondents typically will be no greater than plus or minus one point
on the 100-point scale.
Calculating the Composite Ratings
The survey contained 88 items that Louisville employees were asked to rate on the previously
mentioned agreement scale. A statistical procedure known as factor analysis was conducted to
identify the underlying question groupings that could be gleaned from the employees'answers on
the survey. This examination identified the individual items (such as "Overall,I am satisfied with my
job,""I have the right skills and abilities for doing this job," etc.) that shared a common theme such
as job satisfaction or employee fit.The factor analysis resulted in 12 main factors,or dimensions, of
employee work experience. More information about this analysis can be found in Appendix C:Survey
Methodology.
These factors or groups of items were used to create composite ratings that measure aspects of
employees'work experience. These composite ratings were calculated as the average of each of the
items included in the factor, converted to the average on a 100-point scale. Thus, the score for each
factor was also on a 100-point scale. There are composite ratings for the following aspects of
employees'work experience:
• Job Satisfaction
• Job Pride and Contentment
• Supervisor Relationship
• Employee Support and Recognition
• Employee Fit and Values
• Employee Workspace and Resources
• Work Group Qmlity and Collaboration
• Department Communications and Policies
• Growth and Training Opportunities
• Employee Evaluation
• Employee Benefits and Programs
• Employer Communication
ci
v I
e.
yW
•a
DRAFT Report of Results
4
