Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
May 30, 2017
Trice says my impression from the engineers when doing the assessment is the cabins are in
better shape than anyone thought.
Dickinson says the point of the HPF is to preserve structures like these. In my opinion, we
need to act. As far as the amount, I am blown away by $250,000 to move two little shacks. I
think it is worthwhile to figure out more responsible ways of spending money to accomplish the
task. I don't think we are far from making this a community event. Restoring it can be more of a
project than an outlay of money. I think John Breaux Park is the best idea with the least amount
of harm to other uses. I feel like the east side of that park is highly used, but it would be highly
visible with foot traffic. It would be good for kids and good for casual observing. I think keeping
the cabins together is good because they are together now. Moving them together keeps the
cost down. It allows for one to be nicely done and the other to be simply looked at. My
recommendation is yes to preserve them, yes to move them, yes to put them at John Breaux
Park, and spend money to restore one cabin fully and savey not re ring the other fully, and
yes to look for more bids to bring the overall cost down.
Trice says to clarify Fahey's question, CC could decidgive the monem the HPF at their
meeting on June 6.
Fahey says in that case, I agree with everything DickitSson said.
Cyndi Thomas asks if DELO is still interested in moving the cabins to the greenway.
Trice says because of CC's discussion regarding money to keep them within the HPF area, the
Nawatny Greenway is not in the area. Although DELO would pay for the move, they would not
pay for the site itself and rehabilitation which would come from a different funding source.
Koertje asks if anyone has talked to the 740 Front restaurant people about relocating them
there. Trice says I have not talked to them.
Haley asks if both cabins would fit on that property. Trice says yes. The concern is with
Farmer's Market and Street Faire and other events that would have to work around them.
Fahey says I have gone to almost every Farmer's Market and nearly no one sits in the back of
the park. There is a little wall by the concrete wall, but they are either in the front area or sitting
on a bench.
Dickinson asks if booths are ever set up there. Trice says no.
Poppitz says I'd like to make a motion that you tell CC that they should authorize picking up
and moving the cabins to a temporary location on my property. This way, you can take your time
in picking a location.
Dickinson asks if anyone feels strongly about a different location.
Koertje says I like the Pine & Hwy 42 because there is not much there and it will not interfere
with anything else. I can see 740 Front or others objecting to it.
Haley says I can see splitting up the cabins for that reason. One cabin would have more space
and accessibility at John Breaux Park, and one have visibility at Pine & Hwy 42 as an entry. It
would possibly be more expensive to relocate twice but splitting them up would make sense.
Koertje says I prefer keeping the cabins together because I think they have better context.
Fahey says, as Mr. Poppitz said, we don't need to decide tonight where they will go; just that
we will keep them someplace.
Koertje says that might be the best option given the time constraints although moving them
twice will cost more.
Trice says CC is looking for a location recommendation. Maybe it is two recommendations but
you could recommend the cabins get moved to a temporary place.
Dickinson says when you move something, you put it up on a trailer and detach the trailer. It
would be a short term thing.
Koertje says a lot of the cost is Xcel and moving power lines.
Poppitz says if they move to my yard, there are no power lines.
