4/3/84 Page -4- <br />some of these things are occurring in the <br />:Lon.g run; and perhaps it's time to open up <br />they dialog about getting some input on how <br />schools are laid out, how traffic patterns <br />are. organized, etc. so that we can minimize <br />the impact of needing continual human inter- <br />vention in all this. He felt that this <br />should be done both on a short and long term <br />basis. Further stated that this is an issue <br />that is more than timely to be raised since <br />a new elementary school is being built. <br />Councilwoman Morris Stated that she felt this is being done now, <br /> and. Director Kasch should respond to this. <br />City's Input on School Director Kasch advised that 2 weeks ago they <br />Design and Traffic Pattern had a meeting with the Parent-Teacher group <br /> at the Elementary School to discuss the con- <br /> getion problems, foot traffic problems, inter- <br /> action problems of children on foot, children <br /> on bicycles, parents picking up children, <br /> buses picking up children, staff going to <br /> their cars and all these things happening in <br /> a few small area. He felt that Louisville <br /> Elementary School is a very good example of <br /> some inadequate site planning. Part of their <br /> meeting was to solve some short-term problems, <br /> and if those things worked to make some long <br /> term recommendations to the School District, <br /> which was something that Marilyn Labuda, <br /> the Principle was interested in making cer- <br /> tain recommendations i.e. increased parking, <br /> some improvements for school bus pick-up areas, <br /> and other recommendations. Mr. Kasch sug- <br /> gested that the City support all Mrs. Labuda's <br /> recommendations to the School District, for <br /> Capital Improvements. <br /> He agreed with Councilman Luce's comments that <br /> on the school now under construction, the City <br /> has very little input for its design or traffic <br /> circulation. He felt that the first step is <br /> being made now in trying to get the City and <br /> School District working together. Staff <br /> ventured to say they would order and put-up <br /> signs for the safety of the children. Felt <br /> that a cooperative dialog was needed on a <br /> year long basis and felt that some progress <br /> was being made in this area. <br />Councilman Cussen Commented that when the Attorney and staff <br /> are working on this, a suggestion might be <br /> that the Planning Dept. in conjunction with <br />
