Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
September 15, 2008
Kron answered that the plan is to rehabilitate the historic pillars and gate but that the
fence itself is not historic.
Whiteman asked if there were plans to rehabilitate the existing headstones and if there
are plans for a historic preservation plan for the site.
Kron stated that normal maintenance is completed on the headstones each year, so
there is no large-scale deterioration that needs to be addressed. She added that a
preservation plan is listed as an option in the Master Plan, but it would require funding.
Koertje stated that volunteers could be used for a preservation plan and to document the
existing headstones.
Whiteman suggested that such documentation be included in the Master Plan.
Muckle asked how people can research who is buried at the cemetery.
Kron stated that staff in the Parks Department will research the files for any request.
Muckle thanked Kron for the presentation.
McMenamin rejoined the meeting.
Subcommittee Reports continued
Incentives - No report.
Landmark Plaque Design -Whiteman stated that he had met with the designer from
UCD and will bring design ideas to the October meeting.
Muth stated that this could be funded with a CLG grant application. The deadline for
the 2009 grants is November 17. Members decided to see where we are in the
process at the October meeting and if we are ready to proceed to apply for the grant.
Whiteman asked if graphically this should be linked to the Mine Marker program.
Members agreed to start with this program and if it works well to consider linking the
two.
Mine Marker Program - Koertje stated that the group met in early September and
decided the first two markers should be located at the Ajax Mine (marker in
Community Park) and the Fireside Mine (marker located in the Tamarisk Open
Space.) He stated he liked the idea of linking the program to the plaque program.
Green Build Pamphlet -Members reviewed the content submitted by Lewis and
gave Muth the go ahead to format it. Members will refine the pamphlet as we move
forward.
Why Preserve Pamphlet- Koertje stated that he and McMenamin have started a
draft based on the information in the existing Preservation Handbook. He stated that
a draft would be presented at the meeting in October.
