Planning Commission
Meeting Minutes
December 14, 2017
REFERRAL
The Corner PUD
The Commission requested a referral process for the Corner PUD in their previous
Commission meeting. The Historic Preservation Commission can provide comments on
the PUD requirements.
The Corner PUD application contemplates a sign program that will allow a new sign that
mimics the shape and certain iconic design elements of the existing Blue Parrot sign at
640 Main Street. The PUD requires that the new sign shall be the same size, shape,
and material as the existing sign, and utilize exposed neon elements and marquee
bulbs for illumination. The design shall also incorporate the arrow at the bottom of the
sign in all sign designs. The PUD also limits the overall character and logo heights. The
PUD regulates the shape and the size, not the color or the font. It has been requested
that the Commission make a consensus so that it can be forwarded to Council.
Chuck Thomas asked if the overall dimensions were the same as the original sign.
Trice confirmed that they were.
Cyndi Thomas suggested that there would be a plaque on the building addressing the
original Blue Parrot sign.
Dickinson concurred with Cyndi Thomas and thought the signage could address the
entire building instead of just the sign. He thought the applicant incorporated the old
sign well.
Parris added that she understood that the applicant was not required to incorporate
visual elements of the original sign and that they had done a good job of nodding to the
original sign. She agreed that there should be signage about the original sign.
Trice stated that the signage could be similar to the sign at the Rex Theatre that stated
that the original curtain was now housed the museum.
Ulm stated that he did not think the applicant needed to have the same size and
dimensions as the original sign.
Chuck Thomas stated that he was grateful to the owners for making the sign similar to
the original sign, even though they did not have to. He did not have a problem with
emulating the old sign, but he agreed with Ulm that the sign did not have to be a direct
copy.
Dickinson stated that an illuminated sign in that location made you feel like you were on
Main Street. Losing the old sign was sad and a close facsimile was a good move. He
added that the did not think the proposed sign look like the Blue Parrot sign, but anyone
who knew the original sign would appreciate the nods to the old signage.
Chuck Thomas added that it was a similar idea to the Empire sign refurbishment.
