a. Providing residents additional time in escaping a fire;
b. Buy -time for the Louisville Fire Department in responding to a fire.
2) Slower streets save lives. Roadway safety for all modes of travel is a
significant community concern. Requiring residential sprinklers and
establishing Appendix D of the Fire Code as a guideline, not a standard,
will allow the City and the Fire District to work together on a case -by case
basis to ensure the City's street designs and retrofits provide essential fire
access requirements without compromising roadway safety
3) Louisville is largely built -out. Future growth in the City will come from infill
redevelopment, not green field new development. Infill redevelopment
implies that homes will be built in closer proximity to one another.
Residential sprinklers will reduce the risk of individual household fires
impacting adjacent properties.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends the Building Code Board of Appeals review, discuss, and
recommend possible edits to the draft ordinance amending chapter and
continue the public hearing to October 17, 2013. Staff will return to the
Building Code Board of Appeals on October 17, 2013 with a revised
ordinance for a final motion from the Building Code Board of Appeals which
advances the final draft of the ordinance to City Council for consideration.
