Open Space Advisory Board
Minutes
December 10, 2008
may have dropped due to poisoning and plague. The petition will be
reviewed for 90 days followed by 12 months of study.
3. Property lines are being surveyed and carsonite markers placed at North
property and Davidson Mesa. Russian olive trees locations are being
mapped on all Open Space with quantities and diameters recorded.
4. Alergen of Switzerland is using our Russian Olive pollen to test for
allergies and will remove the tree while they are at it. Ember is currently
working with Boulder County and other Front Range agencies to form a
group called the South Platte River Watershed Weed Management Area.
This group will apply for grant money that will be used for the
management of Russian olives.
5. Tonight Jim Krick is at the Night of Sharing at Coal Creek elementary to
inspire young volunteers to participate in Open Space projects.
6. City council has approved supplemental funding for Daughenbaugh and
Recreation Center trails.
Board Updates
Tom reported graffiti on the ditch behind Sycamore Circle to the police.
The police credit it to recent activity by the West Side gang. Gang activity has
been increasing in city.
Spencer spoke about degradation of the Davidson Mesa Off Leash area.
See handout. One suggestion he made was to go back to dogs on leash. This
will be discussed further under agenda item.
Review and Comment on the Integrated Weed Management Plan
See Handout. Ember and staff started working on this in May 2008. It
has had peer review. The Weed Management Plan covers Open Space and
Park properties (including the Golf Course). It lays out all the weed management
tools and how to use them. The Horticulture and Forestry Advisory
Board(HFAB) reviewed the plan last week and have made some comments.
Tom wants a list of what chemicals are used where and when on city website
and in the plan. HFAB wants priorities to the types of management and to note
which weeds are toxic to animals. HFAB would like to have a joint meeting to
give City Council a resolution at our next meeting. Bret moves and Larry
seconded to meet half an hour earlier at our next meeting to make a resolution.
The motion was unanimous. Jean Morgan wanted milkweed removed from list of
weeds to manage.
Create Agenda for Joint Meeting with Broomfield
Planning will update us about Conoco development. Broomfield will
update us on trail connections around Rock Creek. Ember reminded us of items
listed from the previous meeting: trail connectivity, mall, Scriffiny, 36 corridor,
mission and function, communication with council, land acquisition collaboration
opportunities. Bret recommended removing the mall from the discussion list, with
general agreement.
