family was living in Louisville by 1896, making them some of Louisville's earliest Italian
residents. George Romano worked as a coal miner.
In Louisville, they had at least nine additional children who included: Mary (1898-1973);
Carmen "Tony" (1899-1983); Albina (1902-1993); Clementina (1905-1999); George Jr. (1906-
1989); Anna (1909-1963); Sabina (1910-2004); Louise (1912-2005); and Albert (1914-2000).
The family also took in boarders, as shown in census records. These boarders may have lived in
additional buildings on the family compound.
Following the death of George Romano in 1929, Annunciata continued to reside in the house
with some of her children. The 1930 and 1940 census records show that she had adult sons
living at home who worked as coal miners and likely helped support her. For several decades,
two of her children lived nearby, just across the railroad tracks to the west: Carmen at 225
County Rd. and Mary (Caranci) at 1028 Rex St.
The following images of 301 East and its ground layout are from the Boulder County Assessor
card dated 1948. The house was reported to consist of 676 square feet at the time.
2
