Frenchtown, located to the east, and a number of houses in Kimbertown were owned
by people of French origin.
Charlotte Kimber transferred this parcel to Henry Helart in 1911. There were two
women (mother and daughter) from the same Kimber/Wardle family with the name
"Charlotte Kimber," and the research conducted for this report did not shed light on
which Charlotte Kimber owned and transferred this property.
Helart Ownership, 1911-1917, & Discussion of Date of Construction
Henry Helart owned this property for about six years, from 1911 to 1917. The County
Assessor's records state that the house at 317 Roosevelt was built in 1912. The County's
records have sometimes been found to be incorrect with respect to the date of
construction, so other evidence is looked to. In this case, it seems very plausible that it
was built in circa 1912 because it the year immediately after Henry Helart purchased the
property. Also, it seems likely that it was built during his ownership, because when he
sold the property in 1917, it was for more than double what he had paid for it in 1911.
Henry Helart (1873-1937) was born in France and came to the U.S. in the late 1800s. He
married Evodie Bodhaine in 1898 in Boulder County. They had at least five children
between 1899 and 1915. The Helarts joined other French -born residents by the name of
Helart who are known to have lived in the Kimberly Addition. Unfortunately, due to the
lack of local directories and census records for the years when Helart owned the house,
it is not possible to confirm whether or not the Helart family lived in the house at 317
Roosevelt.
In 1917, Helart sold the property to Thomas Scarpella (1889-1953). He owned it less
than a year before selling it to Mary Deborski in 1918.
Deborski Family Ownership, 1918-1956
In 1918, Mary Pankoski Deborski (1895-1926) purchased this property. She had come to
the United States through the port in Galveston, Texas with her family in 1907, when
she was 11. The Pankoski family settled in Superior. Mary married Costek "Gus"
Deborski (1886-1959) by 1910. He had come to the U.S. at the age of 9 with his family.
The 1910 census gives her background as German -Polish and his as Russian -Polish. They
had at least four children: Leo, born 1911; Stanley, born 1913; Andrew, born 1914; and
Bennie, born 1917.
The 1918 directory for Louisville shows the Deborski family to be living in Louisville, but
without a specific neighborhood or street listed. The 1920 census shows them to be
living in the correct vicinity for it to be the house at 317 Roosevelt. Gus Deborski was at
2
