A photo of the two buildings that used to stand at 801 Main (before the State Mercantile
building was built) shows part of a building that may have been the Hanley dwelling on the far
right:
LHM, uncatalogued photo.
While this does not show the current building, this information is included in order to give a
complete history of the site.
Date of Construction of the Current Building; Building's Use as a Second Hand Store
The 1948 Boulder County Assessor card for this property states that the building was
constructed in 1900. However, the website of the County Assessor gives the date of
construction as 1902. Boulder County has at times been found to be incorrect with respect to
the year of construction of some historical buildings in Louisville, so it is important to look at
other sources of evidence. This is especially important to do in cases such as this, where the
County gives two different dates of construction for a historical building.
In this case, the following excerpt from the 1900 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map shows that the
original dwelling appears to be gone, and in its place was a building being used as a barber shop
and dwelling. It covered the complete frontage of the parcel, as the current building does, and
while it is not as long as the current building, it seems likely that it shows the original part of the
current building.
r' •'r'`
{
The 1900 Sanborn map would therefore seem to show that the building was constructed by
1900. Given the lack of additional information, and since the 1900 date from the County
Assessor card appears to be supported by the 1900 Sanborn map, the year of construction is
presumed to be "circa 1900." It is also possible that it was constructed a few years before 1900.
2
