In 1955, a couple from Nebraska with furniture store experience, Howard and Evelyn Graham of
Nebraska, bought a partial interest in the store and took over the daily management of the
business in order to relieve La Salle of these responsibilities, for health reasons, according to an
October 1955 article in the Louisville Times. In 1955-56, Toney La Salle expanded the store to
include the area of the Pellillo Shoe Shop and the front of the Pellillo House, as seen in the
following undated photo and 1956 ground layout. (More information about the Pellillo House
and Shoe Shop is below.)
The 1956 Assessor card stated, "Residence remains the same but old shoe store has been torn
down and new store Bdlg Built around house. Front made of plate glass & Brick — rest is frame."
The date of the Assessor's visit was 12-3-1956. However, an article in the Feb. 5, 1960 Louisville
Times mentioned in an article about the Pellillo family that Toney La Salle had not torn down
the Pellillo Shoe Shop when he expanded his store.
This photo from the 1977 Assessor card, taken from Main Street looking southeast, shows the
north side of the Pellillo House with the La Salle Furniture Store having been added to the front
of the house. The edge of the Mossoni House at 836 Main is just visible on the left.
7
