Until the 1980s these three homes at 636, 620, and 600 Garfield were the residences of
at least four generations of the Barday family.
Amelia Barday was born in 1893, the daughter of Louisville blacksmith and hardware &
lumber store owner J.J. Steinbaugh and Elizabeth (Carrie) Stretz Steinbaugh. According
to her obituary, Amelia was the bookkeeper for the Steinbaugh business from 1910
(when she was just 17 years old) until 1921, then again from 1939 until 1950. In 1919,
Amelia Steinbaugh married Felix Barday.
Amelia and Felix Barday had two sons, Felix "Bud" Barday and Gene Barday, and a
daughter, Bernita Barday (Ahern). For a period in the 1940s, they resided at their
mother's home at 636 Garfield, along with the wives and children of Bud Barday and
Gene Barday, as well as their grandfather, J.J. Steinbaugh. This led to the construction of
600 Garfield and 620 Garfield, into which the Bud Barday and Gene Barday families then
moved.
By all accounts, the house at 620 Garfield was constructed in 1950. It became the
residence of Gene and Beverly Barday and their five sons and two daughters. Amelia
Barday continued to be the owner of 620 Garfield until 1958, when she conveyed it to
Gene and Beverly Barday.
The following images from the Boulder County Assessor show the house at 620 Garfield
soon after it was built in 1950 (and perhaps was still in the process of being built) and
show the ground layout:
