Revitalization Commission
Minutes
October 28, 2020
for LRC to participate in development of 5G infrastructure? He would like to
think about a next generation downtown. If we organize thinking along these
lines, the LRC will spend money wisely and achieve longer term goals.
Council member Lipton agrees with Commissioner Bradfield. People need to be
lured into the district, have them spend more time and money there. This can
be accomplished with furniture, lighting, wireless capabilities. There are good
examples in mountain communities. The City has struggled with signage for a
long time. He asked if the signage would be in the Urban Renewal Area (URA)
or extend outside the district. Director Pierce said she is proposing starting in
the district. Additional signage is envisioned in the plan but she does not know
if the URA can use funds outside of the URA. There could be signage issues
that could help the URA that will need participation from City Council. Once a
phase of signage goes in, it generates more enthusiasm for more signage.
Commissioner Tofte agrees with Commissioner Bradfield and would like the
mention of public art. Lafayette has public art that makes areas inviting. He
would like the art community involved and contribute to art community efforts.
He believes public art contributes greatly to the overall feel of an area. Director
Pierce said there is art proposed at the underpass and if LRC would like to
fund, the Louisville Cultural Council could create a process for an art
installation.
Director Pierce would be heavily involved with implementation of these types of
projects, in conjunction with Planning and Public Works departments.
Commissioner Gorsevski said some things on the Work Plan can help more
immediately. There are examples of smaller communities beautifying
downtowns. Short-term things include Friday/Saturday no parking so people
can walk on the street. He believes we should consider doing short-term items
now. Another area that needs improvement is an improved entry to downtown
from Hwy 42.
Commissioner Adler agrees with Commissioner Bradfield: technology should be
a focus. She is interested in digital directory kiosks and she agrees with
Commissioner Tofte about public art.
Mike Kranzdorf would like to work with the City on Pine Street/Hwy 42.
Monument signs could have electronic signage to advertise city events and
increase connectivity.
Agenda Packet P. 6
